General Lab Use Policies

* Use of Systems Labs computers implies agreement with the UK Computing Policy. Violations of UK Computing Policy or any of the policies below may result in the suspension of computing accounts and access.

* Academic use is given priority over non-academic use of computers. Persons using computers for non-academic activities may be asked to move if the computer is needed for academic purposes by another user.

* Computers are made available on a first-come, first-served basis. In the case of computers with specialized hardware and software, users not taking advantage of these items may be asked to move to a different computer if an item is needed by another user.

* Users should observe lab opening and closing times. Consultants are not permitted to allow users to stay in the lab past the posted hours. Computing activity that is not completed by closing time may be forcibly terminated in order to close the facility.

* You must log in with your own account before using a computer. You must log out when you are finished. You may not share your account or password with anyone else. If you do not have an account, the consultant on duty can help you obtain one.

* Any computer left unattended for more than 15 minutes will be considered available for other users, regardless of any notes left by the user. Users may not save computers for others or leave their accounts unattended. Special exceptions may be granted by the lab consultant on duty.

* Users should not reboot or turn off lab computers without permission from a lab consultant. Users should not deliberately run programs or code that will crash a computer.

* Installation of software that violates its licensing agreement is prohibited. Not all types of installations of licensed software are possible due to restrictions on user accounts.

* Personal files (other than video) should always be stored in the user’s home directory or on personal media. Files left on the Temporary_Storage volumes may be deleted.

* Equipment checked out from the helpdesk may not be removed from the lab and must be returned when you leave the lab. Fine Arts video cameras are the only exception to this rule. The person who checked out the equipment is responsible for it until the consultant on duty checks it back in.

* Lab equipment and peripherals may not be moved. Users who experience problems with equipment or peripherals, including printers, should ask for help from the consultant. Please do not attempt to fix problems yourself.

* Systems Labs is not responsible for personal items left unattended.

* Lost items are held at least two weeks. If your name and contact information are attached to the item, Systems Labs will attempt to contact you.

* Users must be considerate of others by keeping noise and other disruptions to a minimum. Headphones are required when using sound. Disruptive persons will be asked to leave.

* The use of food, drink, or tobacco products is not allowed.

* In case of fire alarms or dangerous weather conditions, you will be directed to evacuate the area by Systems Labs staff. Systems Labs is not responsible for personal items left in the building during an evacuation.

Additional Policies Relating to
the Computer Science Lab

* You cannot telnet into the CS Lab. SSH Protocol is the recommended mode of remote access.

* Check the permissions of files you create to prevent other users from copying your work. Ask the consultant on duty for assistance.

* When running long jobs, please be considerate of other users and use the "nice" and "renice" commands.
