Printing Tips

If you have a problem or with printing, please ask for help from the consultant on duty. Do not send your print job more than once, as doing so may only intensify the problem and create a longer delay for you and other users trying to print.

Mac OS X 10.5 manages print jobs from the Print & Fax preference pane, which is part of the System Preferences. When you submit a job, a printer icon will appear in your dock while the job is being sent from your computer to the pay-for-print servers.

The Pay-for-Print System:
Printing in the student computer labs costs $.12/page to print black and white and $.50/page to print color. Funds to cover these costs can be added to a student ID card or DART card at a variety of locations, including the DART machines in the King Computer Lab and the atrium of the Little Fine Arts Library. Funds can also be added online with a credit card. The public printers do not take cash, but there are DART machines in or near most computer labs. To print a job, swipe your card and select your job using the touchscreen card readers located by each printer (complete instructions).

The pay-for-print system and printers are managed by IKON, not the computer labs. Some problems with printers can be addressed by the student consultant on duty, but others need to be reported to IKON. Although an IKON representative is on call at all times, it may take a while for the problem to be resolved. For this reason, it is a good idea to leave plenty of time for printing before a deadline. Your patience is appreciated.

Business and Economics (SCS lab) Windows XP

Use of Personal Paper in IKON Printers:
Users are not allowed to use their own paper in the printers because non-laser paper can jam or damage the printers and may cause ink smears on other users' documents. Our printers also do not support paper sizes other than regular letter or legal.

Missing printers or printer errors:
Please see the consultant on duty for assistance if you are getting errors while trying to print or if the printer you want is not available on your computer. Please do NOT try to fix the problem yourself.

Refunds:
Refunds are granted for printing problems that are the fault of the lab hardware, lab staff, or the pay-for-print system only. While a courtesy refund may be given for the user's first printing error, it is the responsibility of the user to learn the proper way to print from the lab environment and to remember instructions given to him/her by lab staff members. There are signs posted throughout the labs and above the printers with printing instructions and the student consultants are available to help with questions. Repeated printing problems that are the fault of the user will not be refunded.

To request a refund, see the consultant on duty as soon as the printing problem occurs. You will need to provide your name, your user ID, your student ID # or the # on the DART card you used to pay for the printing, the time of the printing error, the printer you were printing to, and the number of sheets in the job. Refund requests are verified against printing records and the funds will typically be returned to your card within one business day. Consultants do not have direct access to handling refund requests, so they cannot speed up this process.
