Quality Indicators for Assistive Technology ServicesThis section contains current and historical versions of Quality Indicators for Assistive Technology Services in School Settings.
When implementing the Quality Indicators or sharing them with others, please use the most recent document, Quality Indicators 2005, Research-based Update.
Quality Indicators for Assistive Technology Services, 2005
QIAT 2005 contains quality indicators, intent statements and common errors for eight areas. The original six areas of QIAT (see QIAT 2000) have been validated and revised based on research. The two most recently areas (see QIAT 2003) were not included in the research, however they are included in this QIAT 2005 document.
The historical sets of QIAT from 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2003 are included to provide a perspective on the evolutionary nature of QIAT.
Quality Indicators for Assistive Technology Services, 2003
Quality Indicators 2003 retain the elements developed in 2000 and add Quality Indicators and Intent Statements for two new areas: Transition and Professional Development.
Quality Indicators with Intent Statements developed in 2000
Quality Indicators 2000 retain the main idea of each of the Quality Indicators developed in 1999, however, significant development and editing was done in an attempt to further align and clarify the set of Indicators. The most significant addition to the version is the addition of an Intent Statement for each Indicator. The Intent Statements are designed to assist in the application of the Quality Indicators in practice.
Quality Indicators as revised in 1999
The 1999 draft, developed at Summit '99, incorporates much of the feedback gained in presentations around the country. Two additional areas were added to this version: Administrative Support, and Assistive Technology in the IEP. It is also significant that, in this version, a strong effort was made to limit the number of Indicators in each area (no more than seven) and to limit each Indicator to one main idea.
Quality Indicators as drafted in 1998
The 1998 draft includes the first four functional areas that were targeted for development: Consideration, Assessment, Intervention (later changed to implementation), and Evaluation of Effectiveness. Unique to this version is the inclusion of written Scenarios which illustrate the possible impact of the Quality Indicators on assistive technology practices and student learning. Similar scenarios are frequently used in QIAT presentations and will, eventually, be added back into written documents.
