QIAT Summit 2005 will be held on June 16 and June 17, 2005 at St. Simon's Island, Georgia.  The Georgia Project for Assistive Technology will host this event.

You are cordially invited to join your colleagues from around the country to participate in discussions and work sessions that will expand and deepen understanding and implementation of Quality Indicators for Assistive Technology Services in School Settings (QIAT). During the two-day QIAT Summit, 2005, participants will work collaboratively in large and small groups to support the implementation of quality assistive technology services aligned to the Quality Indicators forAssistive Technology by:

  • Developing new tools, forms, and processes identified as needed by the field to support implementation of AT quality services
  • Refining existing materials, forms, and processes to strengthen their ability to supportimplementation of AT quality services
  • Identifying and communicating strategies that have been useful to others in the continuous improvement of assistive technology services
  • Determining ways to increase the use of QIAT by people around the country and the world

Please add your voice, experience, and perspective to this important work... and be assured that, in addition an unparalleled opportunity for meaningful work, there will be lots of opportunity for relaxation and good fun with delightful people! We look forward to seeing YOU there!

QIAT Summit 2003

QIAT Summit 2003 was held in Portland, Oregon and hosted by the Oregon Technology Access Program. The primary work of the Summit shifted from development of Quality Indicators to resources for implementation of quality assistive technology services.

Summit participants reviewed and finalized quality indicators and intent statements for transition and professional development. Participants reviewed research recently conducted on the first six areas of QIAT and recommended changes based on data. Steps were taken to identify existing resources that can be used to support the implementation of the Quality Indicators and to identify resources that need to be developed.

QIAT Summit 2001

QIAT Summit 2001 was held on Sunday July 29, and Monday, July 30, at the Universty of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. The primary work of the Summit included development of a self-evaluation matrix that supports continuous improvement of assistive tecnnology services.

Summit participants identified transition and professional development as the next two areas for which quality indicators will be developed.

It was also decided that the QIAT Summit, hereafter, will take place every other year and will be held in different parts of the country. Portland, Oregon, will be the site of QIAT Summit 2003.

QIAT Summit 2000

Summit 2000 was, again, hosted by the Technology Center for Special Education at the University of Missouri - Kansas City. Registration was open to all who were interested in the active participation in the continuing development of the Quality Indicators for Assistive Technology Services. The primary purpose of this Summit was to develop Intent Statements for each of the Quality Indicators to assist in the understanding and intended use of the Indicator.

QIAT Summit '99

Summit '99 was hosted by the Technology Center for Special Education at the University of Missouri - Kansas City. Registration was open to all who were interested in the active participation in the continuing development of the Quality Indicators for Assistive Technology Services. There were two primary purposes of this Summit: first, to expand the number of people actively involved in the ongoing work; and, second, to identify additional Functional Areas and refine and revise the Quality Indicators for each Functional Area based on the feedback gained in collaborative sharing sessions conducted around the country.

The Pond House '98

In the summer of 1998, fifteen assistive technology leaders from across the country began discussions regarding the need for the development of quality indicators which could be used as a guide to assist in the development and provision of technology services for students with disabilities. It was expected that the indicators could be useful to assist in promoting quality assistive technology services to support education gains for students with disabilities. It was also expected that they could serve as a guide for policy development, program development, preservice and inservice education, and to assist the decision-making of consumers of assistive technology devices and services. Participants in this work were committed, from the start, to developing a tool that would be: widely applicable across the country; useful at national, state and locals levels; supportive regardless of the size of the organization; and, in keeping with the legal mandates that apply to the provision of assistive technology devices and services.

It is important, historically, to note that this work began, the Quality Indicators were called Standards. However, when the Standards for Assistive Technology Services in School Settings were shared at Closing the Gap, participant feedback indicated that the term "standards" was heavily weighted by people's experiences with other sets of standards. The term itself often interfered with people's ability to focus on the content and intent of the work. When the work was shared at TAM in January of 1999, the referent term was changed to Quality Indicators. Shortly after that, the acronym QIAT was coined.
