Mapping Project Information

LA 355 students visited the Pilot Knob State Nature Preserve on September 21, 2016 and used mobile devices to collect GPS data for the existing trail network. We mapped approximately 3.2 miles of trail then used ArcGIS and CARTO software to measure the trails and create both a 2D and 3D representation of the nature preserve.

Geospatial PDF showing scenic index and hiking trails

Our method for creating the Scenic Index was to use ArcGIS's Raster Calculator function to find areas without tree canopy of which are illuminated by a setting and/or rising sun.The index uses three layers : an NDVI raster from 2016 NAIP aerial photography and two Hillshade 10-meter DEM rasters showing areas of sunlight during sunrise and sunset.
