VIETNAMESE and ENGLISH PROVERBS

Preface Vietnamese & English Proverbs Home-Page Menu Links

Proverbs are concise statements expressing deep thoughts, practical knowledge, and experience-based judgments, covering all aspects of life, and bearing some flavour of a particular culture, sometimes in a specific period and sometimes beyond time limits. They therefore fit well in the grand scheme of this website - to exchange cultural information.  Since the bilingual proverbs are presented side-by-side, one might tend to say they are mere translations from one language to another. That is not necessarily the case. The proverbs on this page, to be updated each month, are in fact equivalents and should, to a certain extent, reveal some shades of similarity between English and Vietnamese culture. Also, both foreigners interested in learning more about Vietnamese culture and Vietnamese living inside Vietnam or abroad may find the below dictionary format particularly handy should translation from their mother tongue to the other language become necessary.
