ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Khieu Duc Long photo Mr. Duc Long Khieu taught Vietnamese literature at high schools, including Petrus Truong Vinh Ky Senior High School, Saigon, for over 20 years. During 1974 and 1975, he also held lectureship at the Faculties of Buddhism and Humanities, Van Hanh University – the only Buddhist university in Vietnam prior to 1975.

In 1973, together with his colleagues, he founded a group called

“National Literature Research Group” (NLRG) and served as the group leader. The NLRG proposed to reform the national literature curricula for senior high schools from grades six to twelve. Its proposal was approved and implemented by the Ministry of Education in the school year of 1974 –1975.

After the 1975 communist takeover, Mr. Khieu resigned from his teaching career in protest against the communist rule. However, he continued to conduct his own research on Vietnamese culture. As a result, he was able to finish the first volume of a two-volume set entitled “ Luan ve nen van hoa tong hop cua dan toc Viet nam” (A commentary review of the Vietnamese synthetical culture) in 1990. As the book touched upon sensitive issues that could face communist censorship and even imprisonment of the author, its manuscript had to be secretly sent overseas for publication. The second volume of the book has recently been completed and published in Canada.

Ever since his resettlement in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1991, Mr. Khieu has been whole-heartedly involved in numerous cultural and educational activities in the Montreal community. He served as the Vietnamese representative on the Montreal Catholic Schools’ Commission’s Consulting Committee on Ethnic Groups in 1994.  He taught Vietnamese literature and culture to “Que huong men yeu” (“Our Beloved Country”, a programme for Vietnamese diasporas interested in exploring their cultural roots). He is also often invited by different organisations in Montreal to deliver various speeches on Vietnamese culture. Mr. Khieu has been an active member on the advising boards of The Vietnamese Association of Educational Encouragement and Development in Montreal, Hong Duc Cultural and Educational Centre, and Alexandre de Rhodes School of Vietnamese language studies.

Mr. Khieu’s major publications included a number of textbooks for senior high schools such as “Tan luan de ve Tran Te Xuong” (1972) (New Essays on Tran Te Xuong). He co-authored with the NLRG in 1973 “Quoc van dien giang lop 12 ABCD” (Illustrated National Literature for Grade 12 ABCD) and, also in 1973, with Mr. Tran the Xuong, “Quoc van dien giang lop 10 ABCD” (Illustrated National Literature for Grade 10 ABCD). Of course, his most recent work is the two-volume book to which this webpage is dedicated - "Luan ve nen van hoa tong hop cua dan toc Viet nam" (A commentary review of the Vietnamese synthetical culture). In addition, Mr. Khieu has contributed articles on Vietnamese culture to Vietnamologica (Journal of Vietnamese studies in Canada), "Quoc gia" (“The Nation”, a monthly Vietnamese Community of Montreal magazine), and “Di toi” (“Forward”, a monthly political, social, economic, educational, and cultural magazine with a wide readership in Canada, the United States, Australia and other countries in Europe.)

Mr. Duc Long Khieu holds a Master of Arts degree in Sino-Vietnamese Literature from Faculty of Letters, University of Saigon (1969), producing a 400-page thesis “Nhung khuynh huong chu yeu trong van hoc chu han hai doi Li, Tran” (Major tendencies in Sino-Vietnamese literature during Li and Tran dynasties - from the XIth to XIVth centuries).
